NO! Contemporary American DADA is the companion publication to the Henry Art Gallery’s exhibition of the same name, featuring artists who present confrontational issues and take an uncompromising stand on them. The issue of negation has become an important one in today’s American art, and different aspects of it can be found in the works of Edward Kienholz, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, Hans Haacke, Chris Burden, Llyn Foulkes, and the rock videos that have been selected for this exhibition. The catalogue is published in two volumes. The first volume features an essay on negation in 20th-century art and profiles of the artists and their past work, providing a foundation for viewing the works in the exhibition. Part two documents the actual exhibition. This two-volume format allows—insofar as possible in printed form—a recreation of a viewer's encounter with the exhibition.
