By Josiah McElheny
An Historical Anecdote About Fashion

This catalogue accompanied the exhibition An Historical Anecdote About Fashion. The anecdote referred to in the title is a story that has been told a number of different ways. The essays here form a history around this story. In particular, the excerpts that were chosen from Mark Wigley’s book White Walls, Designer Dresses: The Fashioning of Modern Architecture relate to the impetus to begin this project, which was the fascination with the complex ways ideas in one field of culture influence those in others. Also included are text and photographs from the installation in which objects from the Henry Art Gallery’s permanent collection were displayed along with Josiah McElheny’s work.
